A seed drifted across space. The last product of a dying world, it had encoded within the genetic information of an entire ecosphere, less one species - the very one which created it. They had deemed themselves too harmful to the environment. In their place, the seed held information on biological machines with which to sustain the world it chose as the new home of the creatures encoded within.

Unfortunately,it had been too picky. In the immeasurable time it had spent drifting across the void, it had passed several promising worlds, rejecting each because it was a bit to hot, or to wet... now it was dying. It was this world or none, and this world was nearly entirely aquatic. There were one or two atolls, though. The seed picked one and fell, then started to grow...

It took several years, but the Tree managed to grow itself to the point that it was ready. It started dispensing seed and egg, spore and tiny mammal. Those that needed care as infants were given care using tools grown as part of the Tree. Those that needed shelter found it among the many branches of the Tree, and the subtrees that sprouted across the atoll, forming a dense network through which the Tree could monitor and maintain the ecology as it established itself.

Some years later, from another atoll came something that was unexpected - Life native to this world. To cope, the Tree's very basic intelligence hacked together a few genomes from the stock it stored. Most were to create a niche for the native life to inhabit. One was a semi-intelligent gardener, created to keep the new plants and animals from interfering with the life forms brought to this world by the Tree. Another was a side-effect of creating the others - a junk creature that just happened to be viable. The amphibious being lived fast, died young, and took over the seas and caverns of the atoll.

The Tree itself changed, too. It grew more intelligence centers and ways to manipulate the world - it was going to need them if it was going to create a unified ecosphere from these two clashing worlds.
